KISH LIGHTHOUSE OR BUST.

Michael Flaherty and Fia O Caoimh rounding the iconic Kish                                                                                          Lighthouse in fair weather and good winds on 15th Oct 2018. A most wonderful passage complete with the                                                                                   the ultimate sunset! Boat speeds on the way out averaged 6.5 knots. Return trip was a little slower. Arrived                                                                                     into Dun Laoghaire just after dark.    Photo by FOC.

Eoin Collins, Kevin Hughes, & Fia on night exercises West of Kish. 29th Aug 2016. Regular ight exercises are critical to successful night-time passages.

Tony at Kish Lighthouse A .jpg

Tony McGregor and Fia O Caoimh rounding the Kish Lighthouse on the 16th of October 2018. Yep! We visited Kish two nights in a row, catching wonderful sunsets on both evenings. On the second passage we passed very close to the lighthouse and experienced a strong whirlpool effect as the tide passed around the sea-column. We will give it a much wider berth from now on!    Photo FOC.

Susan O Donohue, Lesley Willis, and Claire Dennehy (three of the infamous "Beours with Oars" Rowing Team) aboard "Neidin" at the Kish Lighthouse on 8th September 2019. We raced "Bendemeer" from Dun Laoghaire to the Kish and back .... "Neidin" winning the outbound leg, and "Bendemeer" winning the return passage. A great day's sailing with lots of friendly banter between crews. 14 knot breezes and 6 knot hull speeds in moderate seas. Skipper was Fia O Caoimh. Photo Clare Dennehy.

The Kish can be seen from at least 36 miles as you cross the Irish Sea from the East at night. It is always greatly reassuring when you first spot it in the darkness.

Tony McGregor and Fia rounding the Kish Lighthouse on the 16th of October 2018. A wonderful passage with a wonderful sunset!

We ended up a lot closer to the Kish than intended, passing within a half boat length, not a great idea given the risk of entanglement.

The construction of Kish Lighthouse was completed in 1965. The lower caisson was flooded with water causing the tower to float up some 54 feet and the final lift was achieved by jacks and pre-stressing cables built into the lip of the base. These cables allowed for small corrections to ensure the tower was vertical. The water was then pumped out and replaced by 18,000 tons of sand and topped with concrete. The structure has withstood all that nature has thrown at it for the last 54 years.   Photo FOC.

Fia O Caoimh at the Kish Lighthouse in May of 2018. The Kish marks the Northmost point of the dangerously shallow Kish Bank, and is an important shipping mark. It can be seen from approximately 40 miles, and it is an invaluable companion when returning from the UK by night.

DMYC Kish Lighthouse Race 2019. Fia and Len Hayes at the start line of the 2019 Kish Race. Light winds and misty rain throughout, but still exhilerating at times. This was our first competitive race, and we were happy to place 41st out of 55 boats.

DMYC Kish Lighthouse Race 2019. Derek Coffey's "Bendemere" beat us on the outbound leg, but we beat her decisively on the homebound leg, racing against "Yachtsee's" bulbous spinnaler to win on adjusted time. A great day out on the water.
